EDGE- MadWorld Review

A little late to the party, but still a review nontheless from EDGE today.

This review is actually quite controversial because it gives MadWorld the lowest score it has recieved thus far, a 6/10.

FAULTS:

Limited moves causing it to become repetitive fast.
Random mini Wii-remote aided cut scenes for 10 seconds on finishers.
Very occasionally there’s slowdown.

Some interesting things to dock the game for, personally I thought that there were enough moves and combinations of moves to keep the game relatively fresh, and the finishers were cool enough to warrant the cutscenes for me as well. Matter of preferences I guess.

Kombo- MadWorld Review

Another outstanding review for MadWorld, Kombo reviews it with an 8.5.

All this senseless violence is even more senseless unless it's fun to perform. MadWorld is all about fun. Whether it be found in the gameplay, announcers, mini-games, or just the overall experience, you'll find yourself having a great time with MadWorld. Walking around with a bat infused with nails and batting enemies away is a game in itself. You can always find newer and more creative ways to kill someone. The point meter and combo meter will keep you trying new methods of killing until you reach the highest score possible. The game is very open and accessible to your own unique play style.

I hadn't noticed this before today, but I found it a rather interesting list(especially since MadWorld was listed).

At the time this was wrote Madworld was yet to be released, but it certainly looks amazing. It’s like somebody at PlatinumGames said: “Hey, you know what does the Wii need? A Sin City look-a-like game” And so they made Madworld. The story about a man named Jack that’s taken into the sick game of Death Watch is told with, probably, the most violent cell shaded contrast ever made for a game. Pure white and deep black stages and characters, with the red colour of blood splattered all over the place and the yellow onomatopoeic letters of “CRASH!” and “KABOOM!” as the only notes of colour. Unique, funny, and over the top, Madworld takes the concept of cell shaded art to new heights, and demonstrates that it’s the best graphic style for the Wii, without making it kid friendly.

Very well put together review(as they always seem to be, personally I prefer video to text, so perhaps that's why I always love Gametrailers reviews) from Gametrailers, that basically sums up all the flaws every other review mentioned.

It should come as no shock to the videogame site faithful(the ones who really pay attention to the reviews, you know who you are) that Gamespot has given another review that is slightly lower then the average review scores.

Gamespot reviewed MadWorld today, giving it a 7.5/10 citing the following issues:

Eye-catching, black and white visual design

Hysterically obscene running commentary

Violent combat is satisfying and intense.

Losing your last life to a boss means replaying the entire level

Frustrating camera and control issues

Lasts only around five hours.

I don't know if it's even worth saying this anymore(I mean, you just kinda assume right?), but MadWorld has gotten yet another favorable review, and this time from 1Up.

After spending several hours making my way through the mostly monochromatic (blood excluded) streets of MadWorld, I must say that the gamble certainly paid off.

This review comes from a reviewer who was at first skeptical of MadWorld, but then after playing it found that he really enjoyed it.

Gamepro- MadWorld Review

Gamepro reviews MadWorld with yet another favorable score(4.5/5, or 9/10).

When Pat first booted up MadWorld, the ensuing screams of chainsaw mayhem brought editors and staff members a-running from every corner of the building. Every single person in the office crammed into the test cube to watch the bloody spectacle and holy hell were we impressed. Dark, brutal and hilarious in just the right way, MadWorld is a title that has rocketed to the top of every staff member's must buy list. Don't let the fact that it's on a "kiddie console" fool you-this is one title every "hardcore" gamer needs to play, provided you're over eighteen years old, of course. Is it any wonder that it earned the coveted Game of the Month award in our May issue?

Nothing to argue about there, I like the little bit about how the other workers in the office came to see what was going on, and were impressed as well. Looks like one of those games that just looks good from the start, and makes you wish to play more.

NIMF Unhappy With MadWorld On The Wii

The National Institute On Media And The Family has issued a statement about the release of MadWorld on the Nintendo Wii.

The statement goes as follows...

“The release of MadWorld for the Wii brings violent videogames to a once family-friendly platform,” said Dr. David Walsh, president of the National Institute on Media and the Family. “In MadWorld, gamers use the Wii Remote to make the necessary physical actions to chainsaw an opponent in half, impale an enemy with a signpost or decapitate a victim with a golf club. MadWorld is another reminder that parents need to make sure they watch what their kids watch and play what their kids play. In the past, the Wii has successfully sold itself as being the gaming console for the entire family and a way to bring family-game nights back into people’s living rooms. Unfortunately, Nintendo opened its doors to the violent videogame genre. The National Institute on Media and the Family hopes that Nintendo does not lose sight of its initial audience and continues to offer quality, family-friendly games.”

The biggest things to note here are that...
A) Nintendo did not devlop MadWorld in any way, they allowed it on the platform, but otherwise had no say over what exactly happened in the game.
B) Apparently Manhunt 2 went unnoticed by NIMF, because that game not only warranted an A from the ESRB, but was subsuquently banned from many other countries...MadWorld had nothing of this sort, and earned the M rating right off the bat.

Game Informer-MadWorld Review

Another 9 for what has turned out to be a real hit for the Wii(though, some would argue they knew it would be this good all along).

One interesting thing to note about this review is that they mention the commentators as being hilarious and funny, but not over the top(such as repeating themselves). This has been one of the big complaints for most of the other reviews, but perhaps it's just not something quite worth mentioning?

MadWorld runs the gamut in violence, taking an encyclopedic approach to its variety in kills. Some of the bloodletting will make you squirm uncomfortably. Do we really need to learn how many times a person can be impaled on the same spike before drawing a last breath? Can a chainsaw cut through bone that quickly? While these moments recall memories of Manhunt, other deaths fall more into the Itchy & Scratchy universe of absurdity. Place a victim on a catapult, and they’ll launch to the moon. Why play golf with tiny white balls, when you can use a human skull instead? This variety in tone leads to a grandly sinister experience that keeps you guessing what’s coming next.

GamesRadar-MadWorld Review

And the review floodgates have really opened themselves now, GamesRadar, GamePro and a variety of others have released their MadWorld reviews, and for the majority, the game has turned out great.

MadWorld is the definition of Grindhouse gaming, inspired as much by movie directors such as Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez as games gone by. With striking monochrome visuals spattered with gobbets of gore and enough violence to keep the tabloids in column inches for the next sixth months, it’s by far the most stylish Wii game to date. But beneath the gory facade is a staggeringly simple concept.

Eurogamer-MadWorld Review

The first non-favorable(and by that I mean less then 8, but still VERY good) review for MadWorld has hit, and it comes at the hands of Eurogamer.

Still, as a piece of violent spectacle MadWorld is unrivalled. The creativity of PlatinumGames in providing ever more unlikely and delicious ways to kill and maim Jack's antagonists boggles and delights the mind at some deep, base level. And so, no matter how much the schoolboy-humour commentary grates, no matter how repetitive the bits in between the set-pieces start to feel and no matter how frustrating the later levels become, MadWorld provides a rush of blood to the head almost as often as it provides a rush of blood to the pavement.

Another outstanding review in the box for MadWorld. Despite the fact that it is indeed only 6 hours long, the game holds up well in just about every other aspect.

Gets a 9.0 grade from IGN, and there's less then 12 hours til the games release here in the states! Get ready for a great Wii experience.

Nintendo Power puts out an all around great issue this month(including a large showing of Excitebots: Trick Racing, new games A Boy and His Blob and EA Tennis). They reviewed MadWorld with a score of...9/10.

That's 2 very good reviews for MadWorld so far, with an average rating of 8.5.

Summary:
- over the top to an enjoyable level
- Good length
- nice variety for a beat’em up
- controls function well
- nice amount of unlockables
- presentation and story equally appealing
- commentary is funny, but can get repetitive

The first review is here, and (so far) MadWorld is living up to the hype.
Here is a quick summary of the review(as it is a magazine, so I have nothing to link to).

81 % - Bloody action with sensational graphics, great controls and lots of freedom for experimenting.

Pros:
- superb graphics
- great soundtrack
- complex but easy controls
- exciting story

Cons:
- some camera issues
- boring (but short) motorbike passages
- boring multiplayer mode

Also remember that M! Games is a highly critical source, and an 81%(which should be fine for anyone) is a very good score from them.

"Our run in the demo took us through three separate districts in the Varrigan City and Asian Town areas. Each district featured a unique boss that was worth a bump in Jack's Death Watch ranking. Most of the boss runs played out the same, with Jack entering a level and murdering everything. The killing spree nets you points that unlock bonus weapons, minigame challenges, and eventually the ability to take on the boss. The slight variation on the formula we played, Redline Way, had Jack riding a motorcycle and dealing with foes on the road."
